The character of R.P. McMurphy as played by Jack Nicholson is one of the most famous film characters ever created. From the moment he mistakenly commits himself to the asylum in the belief that he can avoid prision time, we are caught up in his doomed battle against the dictatorial regime of Nurse Ratched.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is a disturbing yet comic play where we see McMurphy rouse his fellow patients to rebel against the rules and regulations that govern their lives and suppress their spirits. His efforts to bring a glimpse of freedom to the mental and physical imprisonment of the inmates touch a chord within all of us as we all identify with the only weapon he has - his humanity.
The Oscar-winning movie is based on the novel by Ken Kesey and the play by Dale Wasserman, but this fine film cannot capture the sheer gut-wrenching impact of the play. The final harrowing moments, when seen live, are incomparable.
